SOA Fundamentals eLearning Syllabus

This syllabus provides education in SOA Fundamentals across a broad range of SOA topics.

Across 16 modules lasting over 6 hours, it provides an understanding not just of Service and SOA concepts, but also an understanding of

  • how to model and construct a Service Architecture, from specification to deployment
  • the impact of SOA on projects and programs
  • what is required to ensure governance and manage adoption

SOA Fundamentals is aimed at anyone who needs to understand SOA. That includes IT architects and developers, IT managers and IT specialists of all kinds, as well as business analysts and other business people working together with IT to deliver a service-based business.

Web Service Protocol Fundamentals

To provide a basic understanding of the different web service protocols and how they are used to support SOA.


SOA Infrastructure Technology Fundamentals

To understand the role of infrastructure required to support the operational state of the service architecture. To provide a logical basis for assessing operational SOA infrastructure capabilities.

Part 2: Introduction to Service Architecture and Specification. Duration: 1 Hours 48 Minutes


Specification Architecture Fundamentals

To understand service architecture elements and usage.
To understand the different types of services and their contribution to SOA.
To acquire the ability to participate in service architecture reviews.


Role of the Service Specification

To understand the role of a service specification within the SO process


Service Specification Content

The ability to read and understand a service specification and the purpose of each specification element


Service Implementation Architecture Fundamentals

To understand how the Service Implementation Architecture and the specification of Automation Units provides the transition from the logical business service Architecture to the implementation of Service in software.


Service Deployment Architecture Fundamentals

To understand how to model the Service Deployment Architecture and how SOA concepts affect deployment decisions.

Part 3: Introduction to Project and Program Management. Duration: 2 Hours 43 Minutes


SOA Impacts on Projects

To appreciate how services alter a conventional project management approach. To understand how a highly focused delivery process helps to drive SOA outcomes


Planning Projects for SOA

To understand how SOA affects project planning of roles and responsibilities.


SOA Governance Fundamentals

To understand the core concepts of SOA Governance and how they impact on the various disciplines involved in service planning, delivery and management.


SOA Adoption Fundamentals

To appreciate the range of capabilities needed for SOA success, including SOA goals and SOA value-for-money. To understand the use of a roadmap to plan the cost-effective, just-in-time acquisition of these capabilities.


Business Architecture Fundamentals

To understand the key elements of Business Architecture.
To understand how Business Architecture drives Service Oriented Architecture.
To understand how Service Oriented Architecture drives Business Architecture


Business Value from SOA

To understand what business benefits are enabled by the SOA architecture style and how these add value to the various disciplines involved in service planning, delivery and management.

Purchasing on Behalf of Others:

The purchase of eLearning and certification can be made by one person (the Purchaser) - for example an administrator - on behalf of another (the Student). Both the Purchaser and the Student will need to register with Everware-CBDI in order to create accounts that control access to the purchased content.

In this case, once the purchase has been completed the Purchaser must notify Everware-CBDI in order that the permissions to access purchased content can be transferred from the Purchaser to the Student.

Technical Requirements:

The modules are provided in Adobe Flash format, and designed to be viewed in a browser. The modules are hosted by Everware-CBDI and an internet connection is required to view them.


The modules are 508 compliant, with audio soundtracks and alt text descriptions for graphics. They are also fully scripted and so can be read as well as listened to.

Terms & Conditions:


The Student: An individual who will be using the eLearning modules or will be certified

The Purchaser: An individual who has made the financial transaction or placed a purchase order to purchase the eLearning modules or certification

The Purchaser may be a different individual to the Student. However, in this case only the Student will have access to the purchased content.

The modules may be viewed as often as required by the Student. Everware-CBDI retain the right to terminate availability of a syllabus or module with 12 month's notice.

This License is for use by single individuals in end user and service provider enterprises including commercial and government organizations.

This License is restricted to one named individual, the Student. The modules may be accessed and/or used only by the Student. Sharing of Log-in details is not permitted. The License is not transferrable. The Student and the Purchaser agree to take all reasonable actions to protect, assert, and defend Everware-CBDI’s ownership rights in the modules.
